Quant Stock Portfolios – Weekly update 08/22/2025

Today marks the change of my Website URL to PositionTrader.Blog from SwingTrader.Trading. The name change is to better reflect the Quant Model Portfolios I am managing now in Phase 2 of my website. I am currently using the Position Trading style to populate and maintain the new Quant Model Portfolios. Nothing will change as far as the Model Portfolios are concerned. Just a branding change. A review of the different types of Trading styles:

  • Scalping: A very short-term strategy where traders attempt to profit from minor price changes, often holding positions for only seconds or minutes.
  • Day Trading: Buying and selling stocks within the same trading day.
  • Swing Trading: Typically involves holding stocks for a few days to several weeks.
  • Position Trading: Encompasses a longer time frame than swing trading, ranging from a few weeks to several months, and potentially up to two years.
  • Long-Term Investing: Holding investments for several years or decades, typically with a focus on fundamental analysis and long-term growth potential.

New Gold Pros:

  • New Gold’s acquisition of the remaining 19.9% free cash flow interest in the New Afton Mine enhances its cash flow and production outlook, positioning the company for increased free cash flow and production rates in the coming years.
  • The company has achieved significant operational milestones, including record free cash flow generation and improved margins, while maintaining a strong balance sheet, which offers resilience against market fluctuations.
  • New Gold is trading at a deep discount relative to peers, with superior growth and profitability metrics, offering significant re-rating potential if performance continues.

New Gold Cons:

  • New Gold’s production is heavily reliant on two mines, which increases the company’s exposure to operational risks and site-specific issues. Any disruptions at these sites could significantly impact overall production and earnings.
  • The company’s financial position, while currently strong, is dependent on sustained high gold prices. A decline in gold prices could adversely affect profitability and free cash flow generation.
  • New Gold’s shorter mine life at Rainy River poses challenges for long-term production stability, necessitating successful exploration efforts and potential mine life extensions to maintain output levels.
